Soft Start Dump Valve | What is a Soft Start Dump Valve?

Soft Start Dump Valves provide a soft starting function. During the initial startup, they enable increased control and allow for low downstream pressure, and if necessary, apply a dump function to ensure the rapid reduction of system pressure. Adhering to the machinery and equipment instructions, installing a soft start dump valve is crucial for their proper operation.

How Does a Soft Start Dump Valve Work?

During normal operation, air is gradually allowed to flow through a pneumatic system or device. Pressure buildup in the system can be regulated through a restricted passage in the valve, which is typically an internal spring-loaded valve. When the gradual increase in pressure exerts a force greater than the force keeping it closed, this spring-loaded valve activates.

As a result, the poppet fully opens and moves at what is known as the snap point. In this state, it allows flow to pass through the valve's unrestricted passages fully, swiftly filling the system to the full line pressure.

For most devices, this snap point will range between 40 to 80 percent of the full line pressure. Devices respond to increasing pressure as a function of system volume. Generally, installing a larger valve in a distribution system allows the system to reach full pressure within a few minutes.

The design and placement of the dump valve at the bottom of the system lead to rapid pressure relief. In this case, it can have solenoid operators or electric valves and often has a dump or emergency relief function. Additionally, a limit switch can be placed on the device's valve spool.

Essentially, it has supervisory functionality and sends signals to the spool to open or close. By creating communication with other valves and relays (amplifiers), it helps make devices safer.

How Soft Start Dump Valve Works

How to Choose a Soft Start Dump Valve?

Initially, decide where in the system it may be necessary:

  • During initial startup (if it experiences issues).
  • Resetting where initial speeds could lead to wear or jamming issues.
  • In places where a stop or emergency dump function is required.
  • What flow rate is needed (determines port size and possibly selected model).
  • What is the maximum operating pressure.

For any section of the system operating in this manner, use a soft start or dump valve. The larger the system, the longer the dump or emergency stop function will take to completely relieve the system.

If there is a high safety risk in this part of the device, use monitored soft start and dump versions in accordance with other appropriate circuits to match the machinery guidelines as closely as possible. Position soft start and dump valves in the FRL assembly near the downstream end to prevent excessive backflow from passing through the lubricant.

In cases where large volumes of air must be released, if the air cannot be directed to a suitable position, install a silencer. Worn dump valves with less resistance may not withstand shock loading. In cases where the outgoing air can become heavily laden with lubricant, a strong silencer is usually installed to prevent equipment that requires high levels of lubrication from being affected.
